¿Qué hay en una cabecita tan chiquita? Reflexiones sobre iniciación coral

La inteligencia y madurez de los niños entre 4 y 6 años es algo que muchos desconocemos. Por ello damos por sentado que al ser niños, no es necesario darles explicaciones y los limitamos a lo que nos enseñan que es 'ser niño'. Cuando juegan se divierten (no piensan), cuando cantan se distraen (no trabajan), cuando insisten en decirnos algo no les hacemos caso a la primera porque seguramente es una tontería infantil (y no se sienten respetados). En fin, no pretendo decir con esto que los adultos que los rodean son personas malas y desconsideradas. No. Pienso que esos tratos y maneras de pensar tan comunes son producto simplemente del desconocimiento y esto nos lleva a limitar a nuestros niños a lo que nos imaginamos que ellos deben poder realizar y no los estimulamos a potenciar y cultivar las destrezas y conocimientos que ellos en realidad tienen o pueden adquirir, porque pensamos que son "pequeños".

En una clase de iniciación coral, el niño trabaja distintos aspectos que brindarán beneficios para su inteligencia, madurez, carácter y manejo corporal además, claro está, de sus destrezas musicales. Aprende a usar adecuadamente su voz, concientiza el hecho mismo de la audición, es decir, escucha y piensa, piensa y escucha. Realiza ejercicios de disociación rítmica que benefician su psicomotricidad y concentración. Aprende el lenguaje musical e interpreta sus símbolos. Organiza los sonidos según su altura. Cultiva la intuición y la creatividad. Hace preguntas y comentarios pertinentes que sorprenden a medida que la actividad es más compleja. Observa y es capaz de comentar el desempeño de sus compañeros. Compara, deduce, propone. Es capaz también de sentir y comprobar su propio progreso y el del grupo, mostrando una satisfacción por el logro que lo motiva a seguir adelante. Así mismo, bien guiado, es capaz de concientizar sus errores, sean estos musicales o de actitud, convirtiéndose en una persona mejor. Para eso no hay edad, todo momento es aprovechable. Los invito a probar estas afirmaciones. Si están cerca de algún niño pequeño que participa en un grupo de iniciación coral conversen con ellos, pregunten. Se quedarán sorprendidos con sus respuestas y ellos agradecerán que los traten como personas que piensan. Eso son, sólo que con menos añitos recorridos.

With whom we work? Rehearsing with children and adults

Our musical instrument is formed by people, adults or children. If we conduct a children's choir we should know what they are able to do, how do they think, what do they expect. I believe that children love challenge. They like to be challenged and prove that they can do better than they did before. Challenge is the best motivation. When rehearsing a song, make three of them sing in front of the others, and then ask the others how did their companions do. By doing this we are working on their artistic courage when they have to defend their work in front of the choir. We also help to develop their sense of critic when their team-mates have to speak about what they listened, and to do it properly, based on positive comments.

I also believe children deserve to be informed. This means that when we need to repeat a music fragment we should tell them why are we making them sing it again. Tell them what has to be improved. We also should tell them why do we want to sing this or that song. For example: "we will learn this because is written in another language and is good and interesting for choirs to sing in different languages", or "we will sing this song because the message is beautiful" or "....because it has a complex rythm that I am sure we can accomplish this with success"or "....it belongs to a folk theme of another country" or " ....beacuse themusical language is totally different from what we have done", etc. This practice will also help us to choose a repertoire because will make us think in the purpose of our selections.

Finally, in my writings of today, I would like to add that I believe children love to laugh. Let´s make them enjoy the rehearsal with some surprising comments that could make them happy, some improvised jokes about something that happened in the moment. Local funny comments that can make them be aware of the things that are going on in the rehearsal so they lose if they don't follow up.This is not only to make them happy but also to be attentive.Remember that the conductor should be creative and if working with children, also needs to be quick minded. So, surprise them with an unexpected comment that can help catch their attention in those moments where some would be distracted. They will trust in you a lot more if you get to understand their humor.
